Windows XP Mainstream Support now officially retired

As planned for today, the Microsoft officially retired Windows XP mainstream support. However, extended support will continue till the year 2014. One would wonder, what are the differences between mainstream support and extended support? Well, there are not much. Both offer (free) security updates and phone/web support to the users. However, after today, any new bug-fixes or updates will require extended support contract.

Also, this effects all the versions (excluding Windows XP Embedded). Since, there are not any problems to be solved with the XP (except security holes), we do not need to worry about anything for our netbooks. However, it is encouraged to update to new version of windows (I recommend Windows 7).

Note 1: If Microsoft releases SP4 too, it will retire support for SP3.

Note 2: this deadline is also valid for Office 2003

OLPC wants Windows 7 for ARM

OLPC wants Windows 7 for ARMLooks like the rumors of OLPC opting ARM instead of Atom processor were true. The OLPC has finally decided to go for the ARM platform. The current XO-1 is  very power-frugal and uses just 5 watts of power on an average, which is really efficient for an X86 machine. That said, if the company opts ARM, it would nearly triple the battery life of these devices with the same capacity battery. ARM has much better power management features and also has built-in WiFi. However, the desktop version of Windows does not support ARM processor, which means no XP or no Windows 7.

Windows 7 on the EEE PC 701? – No, we are not kidding [Netbook]

Raine over eeeuser has been to be install the Windows 7 onto the EEE 701. Now, the installation of Windows 7 on this EEE is not just-another-Windows7-installation on a netbook. The EEE 701 has a small 4GB SSD. The footprint of Windows 7 is over 8GB.

So, how to do it?

You will have to nlite the Windows 7 install. This means that you will have to take a lot of components out of the standard Windows 7 install to reduce to a much smaller foorprint.

To make you work easier, he Raine has been kind enough and has posted the configuration settings of his nlite install. This will reduce much of your work.

Here are the steps:

2. Install in a virtual machine. Clean the winsxs. Disable the indexing (makes it snappier) and compress drive (saves a lot of space). You can also delete the DVD Maker folder (since there is no dvd burner on this thing) and Microsoft Games (I don’t like them).
3. OPTIONAL: Use Vispa to set your desired settings (error reporting, scheduled task and so on).
RECOMMENDED: Disable hibernation (in cmd: powercfg.exe -h off) and pagefile. If you do so, reboot before ghosting.
4. Use Norton Ghost 8 to make the ghost image of it.
5. On your EEE, restore your image on the SSD
6. Reboot on WinPE (since the boot manager is broken) and enter the following in Command:
BCDEDIT /set {bootmgr} device boot
BCDEDIT /set {default} device partition=d:
BCDEDIT /set {default} osdevice partition=d:
This will fix the boot manager and allows Se7en to start on SSD. And yes, the d: is correct, Se7en uses two partitions.

Reboot

Note: Make sure you compress the drive after the install to regain 700-900MB

Commentary: The Windows 7 is running surprisingly nice on the EEE 701. The only issue is the unable to run the Windows Live messenger and its inability to get into standby with the SD card inserted.

HP to offer ONLY 3 versions of Windows 7 for the Netbooks

Not to let the consumer be baffled by the plethora of Windows 7 versions, HP has made it clear that it would be offering just 3 versions of Windows 7 which would include Professional and Home Editions as-well-as the Starter edition. Starter edition, as usual will be limited in a way that it will allow only 3 applications to be running at any particular instance.

Although the choice of Starter edition will be nice for the netbooks that will be targetted for the young students market, where they do not need a lot of applications to be running concurrently. This way, the OEMs will be able to cut even more costs.

How To: Install Windows 7 on HTC Shift [UMPC]

HTC Shift comes with Windows Vista only. There is no official support for Windows XP. But, Vista drivers seems to work fine on the Windows 7 (of course in compatibility mode). The snapvue also seems to work fine in Windows 7. To install Windows 7 on the HTC Shift, you will need an external DVD drive.

Here is a step-by-step guide to install Windows 7 on Shift. (thanks to deadnex at xda-devs)

• Download the beta image from Microsoft

• Burn the image to a DVD

• Enable wifi and Bluetooth in Vista.

• If you want to dualboot Windows 7 and Vista you need to partition your harddrive before starting the installation. Use a suitable partition manager such as Paragon Partition Manager and shrink c:/ to approximately 15-17 GB. Create a new partition in the free space.

• Connect the USB DVD drive to your shift

• Press fn+0 (F10) after turning on your shift – select the DVD drive

• Follow the steps for installing Windows. Remember to select partition 2 as target partition if you want to dualboot with Vista. If not you can safely format the existing partition. This will not affect the recovery partition. If you prefer to upgrade from Vista to keep your files and programs you can start the installation from Vista instead of booting the DVD. However, since Windows 7 is still a beta OS this might cause some unknown problems. I recommend installing a fresh copy and dualboot with Vista.

• Download the shift drivers from HTC

Multiple Windows 7 versions = Ok. But will there be a netbook version? [Netbook]

Here is a screenshot from the Windows 7 beta, build 7025. As we can see, upon it’s install, it asks user which version would he like to install. But, it makes the netbook community wonder one thing. What about the netbook version which is supposed to be lighter than the bulkier full verison of Windows 7?

People who would be using Windows 7 on their netbooks, UMPCs and MIDs generally won’t be needing all the featues that they use on their desktops and laptops. Although, there are many rumors from various sources that say that Microsoft would be making a special version for the netbooks and UMPCs, which would be lighther and cheaper. But, may be not in this version.

Installing Windows 7 on Fujitsu U810 or U1010 [UMPC]

Fujitsu U810 has been around for almost 1.5 years. Windows Vista on it’s 800MHz processor was not amazingly fast. This forced many people to switch to Windows XP or XP Tablet. Andre from katastrophos has posted the steps to install the Windows 7.

First of all, you need to download the Windows 7 BETA from Microsoft. Then, burn the ISO to a DVD and use an external DVD drive to install it via USB.

The Setup.exe on the driver CD will complain that the operating system is unsupported. To circumvent this problem, just start the setup in Vista compatibility mode:
Right-click on “Setup.exe”, “Properties” -> “Compatibility” -> “Run this program in compatibility mode for:” “Windows Vista”.

Install the drivers and utilities in following sequence:

Drivers
04. Button Driver
05. Camera Driver
07. Fingerprint sensor (driver)
08. FUJ02B1 Device Driver
09. FUJ02E3 Device Driver
11. Pen Driver
12. Pointer device driver

Utilities
03. Button Utilities
07. Fujitsu System Extension Utilities

The Auto-Rotation is not working at the moment. You have to do that manually. After installing Windows 7, you will get a Experience Index of 1.5. That is due to the processor. Score of rest of the components are ok for UMPC.

Windows 7 on the MSI Wind U100 [Netbook]

Windows 7 is faster and more reliable version of Windows. Last week, Microsoft made the beta available for download for the public. Microsoft says that they have made myriad of changes under the hood and they have been able to make the whole operating system a whole lot faster than the bulky Vista. Vista was never able to make big name in netbooks as netbooks didn’t have the horsepower to run such a heavy operating system.

Windows 7 BETA is running very well on most of the netbooks. So far, Windows XP has been the OS of choice as it performs very well on the Celeron M and the Intel Atom CPU, either of which are being used in the netbooks today. K.C Tofel at JKontherun has installed Windows 7 on his MSI Wind U100 and he is pretty much impressed with it’s performance.

Sleep without any programs open is 7.2 seconds. Resume is 3.6 seconds. The whole installation took less than 30 minutes. Here are the score of Windows Experience Index, which are pretty decent for a netbook.

  • Processor = 2.2
  • Memory = 4.5
  • Graphics = 2.3
  • Gaming Graphics = 3.0
  • Primary Hard Disk = 4.9

Clearly, the Windows 7 will be more netbook friendly and the users will be happy to switch to it from the now-outdating Windows XP.

AIGO MID with Windows 7 will be launched later this year

Aigo has announced that by the end of this year, they will be coming up a MID that will be powered by Windows 7. Yes, you read that right. A Windows 7 powered MID is in the works at Aigo.

Will they use their current MID, shown in the picture above to run the Windows 7? Only time will tell. Windows 7 is way MID and Netbook-friendly OS than the fat and bulky Vista. The Windows 7 feels as-snappy-as the Windows XP and looks as great as the Windows Vista. It would be great to see the Aigo MID running Windows 7
