NC10 9 Cell battery unboxed [Netbook]

UMPCfever have got their hands on teh 9-cell NC10 battery. The NC10 get praises from all the tech bloggers regarding it’s 6+ hours of battery life. That is the story with the 6-cell battery. This makes us wonder, how much juice will the 9-cell battery provide to the NC10? We guess that it will cross the 9 hour battery mark easily with that mammoth battery.

The 9-cell battery is 11.1V 7800mAH. The original battery weighed 365gm and the new battery is just 115gm more, weighing at 470gm. Here is the picture of it with the 9-cell battery installed. Continue reading “NC10 9 Cell battery unboxed [Netbook]”

Get a free LG X110 in UK [Netbook]

We have covered the LG X110 in the past too, which looks a lot like the MSI Wind netbook. The major difference being the inclusion of 3G module. The difference between the LG X110 and the MSI Wind is the use of better casing in X110. It has the same  comfortable keyboard found in MSI Wind.

Here are the specifications of X110:

  • 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor
  • 10-inch WSVGA LCD
  • 1GB (DDR2 533MHz) RAM
  • 160GB HDD
  • RF Receiver – HSUPA
  • 82 Key full keyboard
  • 1.3 megapixel camera
  • Windows Vista OS
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g
  • 3-cell battery/6-cell optional
  • 3 USB Ports

The funny part is that if you go for the free-netbook plan, you would have paid nearly $1000 to your network provider.

Some tips to Optimise your HP mini 1000 [Netbook]

There is an ongoing discussion going over at MyHPMini forums regarding optimizing your HP Mini 1000. The tips and tricks are dividing into 2 sections: one regarding optimizing the speed and other regarding optimizing the storage.

Optimise your HP mini 1000

Speed

2 GB RAM upgrade (PC2-4200 one stick) from Corsair or Centon (tiger direct). It gives you more memory, so more memory demanding programs will run well. Some examples of programs that I’ve found that run better are Office 2007, Picassa, and Quicken
RAM caching or RAMdisk: Some of the “lagginess” you might be noticing with web browsers and other programs can be attributed to slower SSD/hard drive speeds. By putting your internet cache on your RAM (RAMCache), you lose that lagginess

Storage Capacity

Get a big SDHC card like 16 GB SDHC card (currently selling for around $30 on various online stores)
Move “My Documents” to SDHC card – see this link for more information on how to do that
Move windows XP temporary files directory to SDHC card
On-line file storage: There are many free on-line file storage services out there. Here are the ones I know about: box.net ( 1 GB free ), adrive.com (50 GB free, sync software with paid), Microsoft Skydrive (5 GB free, no desktop sync option), and http://www.mesh.com (5 GB free plus synchronization software).

Funny Super Hybrid Engine video [Netbook]

ASUS EEE PCs equipped with Atom CPUs have SHE (super hybrid engine) installed, which has the ability to downscale or upscale the clock speed of the processor as required by the application or user. Here is a funny video made by ASUS demonstrating how the SHE helps to make the battery life better:

You cannot walk with SONY VAIO P in a Jeans pocket [Netbook]

SONY VAIO P claims that it can fit in your jeans pocket. Fine. But, can you walk properly with it in your jeans pocket? Well, you can walk but not too comfortably. The VAIO P will keep sliding out when you walk.

Here is the ad SONY is advertising in Japan, which shows a girl in low rise jeans carrying a VAIO P in the back pocket.

And here is another video, not by SONY, but by Gizmodo Japan.

Also, it is not a good idea to carry such an expensive machine in the back pocket. Is it? ;)

Acer Aspire One 103 now available for preorder [Netbook]

Although the Acer Aspire One 103 was announced just a few days back, but it is already available for preorder at PCcorner. It also confirms that it would be using the new Intel Atom N280 running at a clock speed of 1.66GHz. We though that it would be sporting the 160GB HDD, but it is offering 320GB HDD. It is also coming with 6-cell battery as standard, which should provide 6 hours+ battery life.

It would be nice to know the improvements the Intel Atom N280 brings other than the little 60Hz difference. Another exciting inclusion is the use of Intel GN40 chipset, which supports many hardware acceleration features for video playback.

Also, it seems to have two RAM slots (notice the two 512MB RAM chips). It is available for PhP26,500, which is $550. At $550, it is still a great buy!

Here are the FINAL specs: Continue reading “Acer Aspire One 103 now available for preorder [Netbook]”

AMD CEO agrees that Notebook/Netbook line will continue to blur [Netbook]

A couple of days back, we said something about the future of netbooks.  AMD CEO Dirk Meyer says that “The distinction between what is a Netbook and what is a notebook is going to go away. There will be a continuum of price points and form factors.”

He says that the people who buy cheap netbooks are not able to enjoy full PC experience. I don’t understand this statement. If someone is buying a $299 netbook, he must be well aware of it’s capabilities. At such a low price, you won’t be getting a top-of-the-line netbook with all the features. If you shell out $450 for the ASUS EEE 1000H or S101, you would be able to get a great PC experience unless you want to play Crysis.

AMD CEO agrees that Notebook/Netbook line will continue to blur

Although, we must consider the fact that these words are coming from a company that does not have a netbook processor and think that they do not need one too. [fudzilla]

Multiple Windows 7 versions = Ok. But will there be a netbook version? [Netbook]

Here is a screenshot from the Windows 7 beta, build 7025. As we can see, upon it’s install, it asks user which version would he like to install. But, it makes the netbook community wonder one thing. What about the netbook version which is supposed to be lighter than the bulkier full verison of Windows 7?

People who would be using Windows 7 on their netbooks, UMPCs and MIDs generally won’t be needing all the featues that they use on their desktops and laptops. Although, there are many rumors from various sources that say that Microsoft would be making a special version for the netbooks and UMPCs, which would be lighther and cheaper. But, may be not in this version.
