Acer plans SSD version of 10-inch Aspire One [Netbook]

At first, there were no plans for the SSD version of the Acer Aspire 103 netbook, but now it seems that the ACER is indeed planning to release a linux version of their Aspire one 103, whose HDD version was released couple of days back. The SSD will have the capacity of 16GB and will run Linpus, a custom linux distro. Other specs wil remain the same as the HDD version.

It is nice to see that ACER is still thinking about those folks who want the ruggedness and reliability of the SSD. Personally, I use my trusty old ASUS EEE 701 more than my notebook or my ASUS 904HA just because I know that it uses SSD. Although, the capacity of the SSD is not huge, but anyday I would not be carrying my DVD collection on it. If I feel the need of extra space, I can always plug-in my external USB HDD.

Long review of HP Mini 1000 [Netbook]

TankillerR over myhpmini forum has posted a huge review of HP Mini 1000 and he is very impressed with his mini 1000

The HP Mini 1000 XP is for the most part a solid Netbook. It’s got its quirks like any other Netbook, but with its 10.2” screen, 94% full sized keyboard, ability to turn off the touch pad/buttons, super sexy look and US based tech support (in most cases, more then Asus, Lenvo, MSI at least) It is a good consideration when buying a new or first time Netbook. The Mini is only about 2 months old, so it’s got some catching up to do to the EEE PC brand, but give it some time. I’m sure we’ll all be impressed later down the road.

He is also very impressed with the keyboard.

“One thing that stands out with the Mini is its huge keyed 94% full sized keyboard. It is almost exactly the same as a full sized with a dedicated top row of function keys, large enter and shift keys and 4 arrow keys. The key design goes edge to edge, not the normal curved down style of other laptops. This helps a lot by keeping the keys large and preventing typos”

More (Real) Screenshots of the Windows Mobile 6.5 [Windows Mobile]

Here are some more (leaked) screenshots of the Windows Mobile 6.5. The first screenshot that you see is the use of same homescreen that you see in the Windows Mobile Standard edition that the non-touchscreen Windows Mobile devices. The second screenshot shows the honeycomb screen. It appears to be a separate program that can be launched from anywhere as it overlaps the program currently running. This would provide immediate access to basic phone and PIM functions. One can also access the settings from here.

The usage of a really stupid looking bird is quite funny though

NC10 9 Cell battery unboxed [Netbook]

UMPCfever have got their hands on teh 9-cell NC10 battery. The NC10 get praises from all the tech bloggers regarding it’s 6+ hours of battery life. That is the story with the 6-cell battery. This makes us wonder, how much juice will the 9-cell battery provide to the NC10? We guess that it will cross the 9 hour battery mark easily with that mammoth battery.

Viliv S7 = Impressive! [UMPC]

Looks like SONY is not the only one that has released a luxury netbook. Joining it in the new war of luxury netbooks/UMPCs is the new Viliv S7. The new Viliv comes with a small 7-inch screen and a tablet design. It uses hybrid storage memory scheme meaning you get both SSD and a big HDD under the same hood just like the MSI Wind U115 hybrid.

Get a free LG X110 in UK [Netbook]

We have covered the LG X110 in the past too, which looks a lot like the MSI Wind netbook. The major difference being the inclusion of 3G module. The difference between the LG X110 and the MSI Wind is the use of better casing in X110. It has the same  comfortable keyboard found in MSI Wind.

Samsung NC10 in Blue [Netbook]

Just a couple of days back, we told you about the the Samsung NC10 which was released with the pink color. Now, it is available in blue. There is no difference in feature set of the original NC10 and the blue version of it.

Some tips to Optimise your HP mini 1000 [Netbook]

There is an ongoing discussion going over at MyHPMini forums regarding optimizing your HP Mini 1000. The tips and tricks are dividing into 2 sections: one regarding optimizing the speed and other regarding optimizing the storage.

Optimise your HP mini 1000

Speed

2 GB RAM upgrade (PC2-4200 one stick) from Corsair or Centon (tiger direct). It gives you more memory, so more memory demanding programs will run well. Some examples of programs that I’ve found that run better are Office 2007, Picassa, and Quicken
RAM caching or RAMdisk: Some of the “lagginess” you might be noticing with web browsers and other programs can be attributed to slower SSD/hard drive speeds. By putting your internet cache on your RAM (RAMCache), you lose that lagginess

Storage Capacity

Get a big SDHC card like 16 GB SDHC card (currently selling for around $30 on various online stores)
Move “My Documents” to SDHC card – see this link for more information on how to do that
Move windows XP temporary files directory to SDHC card
On-line file storage: There are many free on-line file storage services out there. Here are the ones I know about: box.net ( 1 GB free ), adrive.com (50 GB free, sync software with paid), Microsoft Skydrive (5 GB free, no desktop sync option), and http://www.mesh.com (5 GB free plus synchronization software).
