We finally have the instructions on how to root the Motorola Moto E using either ODIN or ADB. Before you proceed you must have:

TWRP on your Moto E or ADB installed on your computer.

Method 1: Rooting using recovery

If you want to follow this method, first follow our instructions on how to install TWRP on Moto E. This requires you to unlock your bootloader too. Do not fret – just open the TWRP link and you will be guided for each and every step.

After you have TWRP on your phone, just download Super SU utility from playstore and install it. Here is a direct link to it.

Method 2: Rooting using ADB

After you have ADB or fast installed on your computer, you can root it using ADB. Connect your phone and use these commands to flash it.

adb reboot bootloader
fastboot boot recovery.img

So you have made myriad modifications on your phone and you want to just go back to stock. Or you want to sell it to someone and completely wipe everything stored on your Moto E. Folks at droid-developers have uploaded the original stock firmwares / ROMs of it.

ROMs for all variants of Moto E have been made available which includes XT1021, XT1022 and XT1025. Each firmware has a size of 400MB.

To install them you have ADB and fast boot installed on your computer. After you have installed it, use these commands to flash it.

adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot reboot

Make sure you change the image file name to recovery.img before using above mentioned commands.

TWRP for the Motorola Moto E has been released and that means you will now be install ADB and flash new ROM. You will also be able to sideloading. There are few bugs though such as touchscreen would not work if you suspend the phone. So do not make go into suspended mode after you are in TWRP recovery mode.

To install it on your Moto E you must first unlock the bootloader as other wise you will not be able to do any sort of modifications to your device. Then download the recovery image file from here and make sure you have set up ADB on your computer. Then run these commands.

adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot reboot

Reboot to recovery and type

adb reboot recovery

That is it. You’ve successfully installed TWRP. If you want CWM (clock work mod) recovery you will have to wait bit longer as developers are still working on it.

In a press release Motorola announced the availability of Moto E phone in June at a price of EUR 129. For the comparison sake, the Moto G retails for EUR 179 for the 8GB model. 

Nine months ago, Motorola launched a new line of Android phones. The company started with the Moto X which bought unique features like touch less control. Then came the Moto G that has become the top-selling mobile device in the history of Motorola. It got so popular because it bought top end features at low price.

Now the company has set its eyes at the budget phone market with its Moto E that brings advanced features at a very affordable price tag.

The best part is the price: EUR 129 including VAT. In Italy, the device will be distributed by Tech Data and will be available through many consumer electronic stores starting June.

Finally it is possible to enable USB OTG functionality on the Motorola Moto G

However keep in mind that the USB OTG will work only inside the application. However if you want to open a file in another app, just copy the file to the device or your micro SD card.

Download the app from here. Since it is an APK file you will have to side load it on your Motorola Moto E. For that copy it to your Moto E and open a file explorer. Then browse to the folder that contains that file and open the APK.

Install the file and you will find it in the application drawer. Open it and enable the USB OTG on it to enjoy the functionality.

Instructions to unlock the boot loader of Moto E

First download the Android SDK from here
Then install the latest Motorola USB Drivers on your computer’s desktop. Download them from here. That is the direct link.

Put Moto X in fast boot mode.

To do this, power off the Moto X. Then press the power and volume down buttons simultaneously.

Open Command Prompt on your computer. Then go androidsdk/platform-tools/ (Hold Shift and right click and press open command window here)

Type this in the CMD prompt window

fastboot oem get_unlock_data
You will get a return string. Copy it. For that, Right Click-Mark- Mark the text by pressing the shift key and nowpress Ctrl+C to copy.

Paste all the lines together in a notepad. Remove the empty spaces.

Now go to the Motorola Site and then paste those lines there.

Click on "Can My Device Be Unlocked". Make sure to click on “I Agree” on the bottom of the page.
