"ARM Sparrow" processor for Netbooks, MIDs

ARM processor is widely used in variety of phones including the likes of Windows Mobile, iPhone and Nokia. At the Mobile World Congress, the ARM announced their new processor. This time, it was not for the mobiles, but for the netbooks.

According to the ARM, it’s instruction set is similar to one found in Palm Pre. However, what makes it different is its multi-core technology, which can tremendously increase performance. But, here is the main problem with this processor: it is not x86 compatible, which will not allow you to run your favorite Windows OS on it. Although, it still has huge changes of getting very popular in the netbook space as two very popular linux distributions: Ubuntu and Debian Linux, both can run on this ARM based CPU.

HTC releases HTC DIAMOND 2 – potential MID? [Windows Mobile]

No rumors, no leaked images, but we knew something would be unleashed at Mobile World Congress by HTC. HTC has released successors to the HTC DIAMOND and HTC TOUCH PRO: DIAMOND 2 and TOUCH PRO 2 respectively.

Let’s see what changes have been done when compared to the original Diamond:

  • Increased RAM: From 192MB to 288MB. This should give you a free memory bump from 55MB to 110MB+. This will make the web experience even better as one would be able to browse heavy sites with Opera Mobile.
  • Better Battery: The battery has increased to 1100mAh. This is nice news as the 900mAh battery of the original Diamond was just not enough. Although, it is hard to make out, how much the battery life will increase since the number of pixels have also increased (see next point)
  • WVGA resolution: Is not this the resolution the enter level netbooks used to have? It is actually becoming standard in the Windows Mobile devices, which let them provide the user better web-experience. The original Diamond had a nice 2.8-inch VGA display. The Diamond 2 has even better 3.2-inch WVGA display
  • micro-SD slot: The Diamond 2 looses the 4GB internal storage that was there in the original HTC DIAMOND, but it adds micro-SD slot, which can give you upto 32GB storage.

The new Diamond 2 weighs at mere 117gm, which is just 7gm heavier than the original Diamond.

OQO Model 2+ supports decoding HD 1080p videos [UMPC]

The OQO Model 2+ has built-in hardware accelerated decoding (Poulsbo chipset using Intel GMA500 integrated graphics with the PowerVR core), which fully supports both 720p and 1080p HD content. Although, for full HD resolution, connect the OQO to an external 720p/1080p display using HDMI.

The OQO model 2+ support HDMI monitors up to 1920×1200 resolution. However, there is one hiccup. It does not send voice over it. Anyway, I hope to see more UMPC and Netbooks coming with HDMI ports so that people can connect their devices to the external displays that support hi-def and can enjoy HD content in all its glory.

Viliv S5 officially announced, pricing details [MID/UMPC]

The Viliv will be launching the higher spec model of the S5-series for $649. The premium model that will be launching in US will come with:

  • standard Windows XP
  • 1GB RAM
  • Intel Atom Z520 processor clocked at 1.3GHz
  • 60GB HDD
  • 1024 x 600 resolution
  • GPS
  • Haptic feedback

It is a fairly decent UMPC for those who can live without keyboard. Personally, if I’m out to buy a MID/UMPC for myself, I would get one with keyboard as it makes the URL entry and document-editing so easy.

3G and WiMax versions are in the works.

Here is a video of it running iTunes. The screen seems to be very sensitive and the unit feels snappy too.

The Viliv S5 will be available in March 2009 for a price of $649.

Commentary: Price is acceptable for those who do not want to enter a lot of data. If you enter a lot of data, look for something else. Fujitsu U820 is a good choice for those who want to have a small device with built in keyboard

Watchout when you are buying an External HDD for your OQO! [UMPC]

There are many people who struggle to run their external HDD in their OQOs. Why? Because the OQO has only 1 USB port and some of the external HDDs require two USB ports to power themselves.

Some people think that the OQO does not provide enough power via its USB port. No, that is not the case. The OQO models are fully USB 2.0 compliant and provide upto 500mA of power to the USB device for them to work. If your device requires more than that or if it requires two USB ports, then you are out of luck.

Make sure that the peripheral that you are buying works with the power provided by the OQO and uses only one USB port.
