Intel to increase price of Atom N270 in China

From the past couple of months, a lot of (white-box) netbook manufactures have entered the netbook market. As a result of that,  the supply of the N270 is able to meet the huge demand of the manufactures. Intel has decided to increase the price of the N270 Atom processor to the extent that the price of the N280 processor will be same as the N270 processor.

If the price of the N270 will price same as N280, why not just switch to N280?

ACER ASPIRE ONE 11.6-inch to land sooner than expected

The 10-inch Acer Aspire One (D150) has just started to show at the shelves and now, we’ve already started getting news of its bigger brother, which will sport a 11.6-inch screen. Unlike other netbook manufactures, not only the screen size has been bumped up, but also the resolution. It is now 1,366 x 768. Other specs include:

  • Atom Z530 + Intel SCH USW15S chipset
  • Intel GMA 500 integrated graphics
  • 1366 x 768 (16:9)
  • Power consumption: 4.3W
  • Battery life? 4 hours with the standard battery and 8 hours with the extended battery.

What I am not able to get is why the netbook manufactures are making the netbooks bigger and expensive. There should be restrictions on the maximum size of the netbooks. I’m sure that very soon, DVD drives will become norm in the netbooks. The original idea of netbooks was to be cheap and portable. The newer netbooks are NEITHER.

Fujitsu M2010 Netbook – just a drawing of some random netbook?

A forum member at UMPCfever has posted a hand drawn picture of a new mysterious netbook from Fujitsu. It has been named M2010 and will be unveiled in the month of July (2009). By the looks of it, it seems to have a 10-inch screen. But, the netbook in that picture looks like any other netbook in the market. If you ask me, it looks more like EEE 1000H or EEE 901 with smaller touchpad. The month of July is not far away and if you ask me, it will be too for difficult for Fujitsu to leak just hand drawings to the world before its launch.

Z550 Atom processor reaches 2.0GHz

Information about two Z-series Atom processors was leaked today. One is 1.2GHz processor (Z515), which is extremely power-frugal and consumes just 1.4W when running at full power and as-little-as 0.65W when scaled back to 800MHz clock speed. However, with all  these fancy low number, you will have to bear with slower 400MHz system bus and a 100MHz slower graphics core.

The second Atom is the first one to achive 2GHz clock speed (Z550). Interestingly, it still consumes 2.4W of power which is same as consumed by the 1.86GHz version.

The Z515 will be targeted at the low-powered MIDs and low-cost netbooks. Onviously, the Z550 will be targeted towards hi-end netbooks.
