Kiano Elegance 9.7 3G Screen

Kiano used a 9.7-inch IPS panel with a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels. So we get a density of 132 PPI – this is not a particularly high value and difficult to consider it as an advantage. Since it uses IPS, the viewing angles are excellent, and so are the white balance and color reproduction levels. Brightness on the other hand, is mere 300 cd/m2.

2-second Boot Time? Now, that is what I call an Instant-on OS! [Netbooks]

Moblin is an open source project that is build upon the Linux platform, which is geared towards netbooks, MIDs and UMPCs. At the Linux Collaboration Summit, which was held in San Fransisco, Intel discussed its plans about the upcoming major version of the Mobilin platform. Tests of the latest Moblin 2 alpha release show that the major components (including graphics system) can start up in mere seconds. Intel is stubborn that with the new Moblin platform, 2 second boot time is infact possible.

Within last few months, we have been hearing about plethora of instant-on operating systems. But, so far no OS has been able to boot in 2 seconds. If the folks at Moblin are able to do so, it can totally change the way we perceive our netbooks. For example: People on the go will prefer to use their netbook or MID instead of using their cellphone to check their email.

Sousou, who is the managing director of the Intel Open Source Technology Center said that the aim of Moblin is to improve the quality of the Linux user experience on Atom-based devices. We say that if they can get us online in just 2 seconds, then our experience would

Intel reveals new mobile processors for MIDs: Moorestone, Z550 and Z515

Intel Atom processor is now 1 year old. On its birthday, Intel has introduced two new processor for the MIDs (Mobile Internet Devices). The next generation ARM platform known as Moorestone consumes 10 times less power as compared to the earlier Atom platforms.

Moorestown is comprised of a system on chip (Lincroft) that integrates a 45nm Intel Atom processor core, graphics, video and memory controller, and a companion I/O hub (Langwell).

Intel also annouced two processors which are going to soon debut in the netbook scene: Z550 and Z515. We mentioned about both of them few weeks back. Z515 is meant for low-powered MIDs. It will come with Intel Burst Performance Technology (Intel BPT), which will make the processor run at 1.2GHz when needed.

The Z550 is the first Atom processor to officially reach the 2.0GHz barrier. The Z550 consumes the same amount of power as the 1.86GHz Atom processor.

OQO 2+ discontinued or its revision coming?

If you go to expansys to order the 1.86 GHz version of the OQO, you will find that the expansys is showing that product has been discontinued. This makes us wonder as the product is barely few months old. This can only mean one thing: OQO is going to launch the revision of its flagship model. It can be that OQO is preparing the revision of model 2+ with Intel Atom 2.0 GHz (Z550) instead of Intel Atom 1.86GHz (Z540).

It may be noted that the power consumption of Z550 is same as Z540 even with the speed jump. Also, it makes sense to equip the flagship model with the best available mobile processor.

Soon to be launched: Samsung WiMAX MID AKA SWD-M100 AKA Mondi

Samsung is all set to launch SWD-M100 (Mondi) in the US. The design is similar to Nokia N810 which is also a slider MID. I am personally a big fan of slider MIDs as you can hide the keyboard when you do not want to use them. However, there is one thing that sets the M100 aside from the rest of the MIDs available in the market. It runs Windows Mobile 6.1. It will come with Opera Mobile for the web-browsing as the IE in WM 6.1 is only good for mobile websites.  Here are its specifications:

  • 4.3-inch screen
  • WiMAX
  • WiFi 802.11 b/g
  • Bluetooth 2.0
  • Micro SD card slot
  • 3.0 megapixel camera
  • 256MB of ROM
  • TV out

It will only be available from Clearwire in the US.

Commentary: The main question that comes to minds of a lot of people: Is it going to be successful with Windows Mobile 6.1 as its OS? Personally, Windows Mobile is not a bad choice at all especially with so many productivity applications under its belt. Perhaps they should go with the WM 6.5 which offers IE mobile 6 and better interface.

Meet the very cheap MID – SmartQ 5 MID

The SmartQ 5 MID from China, costs just $130 (900 Yuan) and runs ARM-based Ubuntu. It has a 4.3-inch display with WVGA (800×480) resolution. The display should be crisp at that resolution. It also comes with built-in BT connectivity and WiFi b/g/a.  It also comes with some pre-installed applications (StarDict dictionary and FBReader ebook reader).

It may not be running the best CPU around, but we should not underestimate ARM-processor, which powers more than 80% of the phones that we use in our daily life. Also, I need not reiterate the fact how less power the ARM processors consume.
