Just like other Windows Mobile OEMs, who have used some sort of mobile shell as an endeavour to make the Windows Mobile GUI more finger-friendly, Toshiba has employed a GUI of it’s own in it’s offering TG01. Here is a video of it.

This is for those who thought the Toshiba is dead. True, their last few offering have not able to make a lot of splash in the mobile phone market, but the new Toshiba TG01 promises to break new grounds. With just 9.9mm thickness, a huge 4.1-inch display with a WVGA (800 x 480) resolution and the use of 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, it surely promises to give HTC and other handsets like iPhone a good competition.

Last time, the people were extrememly disappointed with the buggy-software of G900, which was the first WVGA Windows Mobile device. I hope the Toshiba would release a bug-free software for their new big baby, TG01.

On the software side, it promises flash websites as it claims to use Internet Explorer Mobile 6, which is not officially available for any handsets. Also, even the unofficial version of IE mobile 6 is unable to run any flash content nicely. You would barely get 3-5fps on a powerful device like HTC DIAMOND. But, considering the fact that the Toshiba TG01 sports a 1GHz processor, it may be a truly different story. We recently reviewed ASUS P565, which claimed to be world’s fastest PDA-phone. It surely turned out to be world’s fastest Windows Mobile phone. Why? This is due to the Windows Mobile OS. It would be interesting to see, how speedy the 1GHz Snapdragon CPU compared to the 800MHz Marvel PX930, which the ASUS P565 uses. [via engadget]

This simple utility comes from a coder at xda-devs, luigi.ing. This utility lets you change the font of your device such as the system font, menu font and pop-up menu font. It also lets you specify it’s size.

What is Whiskers?

Whiskers is an educational PocketPC application under the GNU/GPL license which tries to exploit all the hardware available on most common PDAs providing a link between different features such as GPS-Bluetooth-Wireless. Generally whiskers was built with radio reconnaissance in mind as help for geocachers or wardrivers but also as penetration and audit tool. There is support for in depth device scanning, triggering actions based on filters when certain devices are in range, centralized GPS logging with search functions for private or public databases and much more.

Although, we normally do not post about dot upgrades, but this update from A_C comes with a nice feature, which would be welcomed by the non-HTC Diamond/Pro users. It is “Vibrate on connect”. This feature is already there in HTC DIAMOND. When you do a call, it vibrates your device to notify you that you are connected to the other party.

In Windows Mobile devices, there is a very irritating quirk that it does not show the actual percentage of the battery left. Instead it shows just 3 bars. When the user clicks on the battery icon, he is taken to the battery settings panel. In some devices like HTC DIAMOND, it does not tell the user the percentage of battery left.

Ariel Battery Monitor comes to rescue you from this problem. It replaces the nonsense battery icon with a more meaningful icon that displays the amount of percentage of battery left in the device.

iPlayer is now finally available for Windows Mobile. However, to run it, you must have Net Framework 3.5 and Coreplayer.

Looks like the rumors of DELL smartphone are up again. Ever since the DELL discontinued their Axim range, there have nearly a pile of rumors that DELL is working a smartphone. Most of these rumors were proved to be wrong, often by DELL’s spokesmen. But, this time Wall Street Journal is saying that DELL is now seriously coming to the Smartphone market.

This is what WSJ has to say:

Dell Inc., aiming to rev up sales as its mainstay personal computer business struggles in the recession, is preparing a move into cellphones as early as next month, said people familiar with the matter.

The Round Rock, Texas, company has had a group of engineers working on the phones for more than a year from an office in the Chicago area, these people said. They produced prototypes built on Google Inc.’s Android operating system and Microsoft Corp.’s Windows Mobile software, these people said.

This means that the DELL is working on a device that can be running:

• Windows Mobile only
• Android only
• Or both Windows Mobile and Android. That is possible now. Take a look at Exeda which can dual boot by using U-bootloader. We can only speculate till DELL really comes up with something. What if DELL announces it’s new smartphone at Mobile World Congress 2009?

gweedo767,a  talented programmer over xda-devs have come up with an application called TrackMyRun that works pretty similarly to the Nike+ application. What it does is that it tracks how many distance have you covered by using the GPS. It also shows the amount of calories that you have burnt.
