Developers only: Use GPS And Web Maps For Location-Aware Apps [Windows Mobile]

Windows Mobile provides many interfaces and capabilities that can help keep the device informed about its environment—where it is, whether it has a signal, how much of a signal, and so on. But how can these features be used in your applications? The most prominent and arguably useful of these capabilities is location awareness. This should enable you to create location-aware applications, ranging from the rather obvious satellite navigation program to the much more sophisticated task list that will be discussed here.

This article will look at the issues involved with using this capability and the additional code you need to write to develop useful applications. In this article, I will discuss the mobile application development environment and utilities, and show you how to build a location-aware task list application that can remind you of a task when and where it’s appropriate.

HTC rolls out mass update for HTC TOUCH DIAMOND [Windows Mobile]

HTC has been rolling out new updated ROMs for the HTC TOUCH DIAMOND. Yes, HTC has not forgotten the Touch Diamond users (totally).

Improved Functions and Fixes:

  1. When you launch the Camera while the system is working on other programs, the preview screen may become black.
  2. When playing a video, sometimes a portion of the video will be cut off a little bit.
  3. Fixes Audio playback problem with the speaker. Specific issues: sometimes the music will turn off and on after 10 minutes, or there is a buzzing sound or no sound at all.
  4. Fixes the problem of not being able to receive MMS when in standby mode.
  5. When launching music via the Music tab on TouchFLO 3D, the sound may intermittently turn off for a second and come back on.

HTC warns that after the update, you won’t be able to roll back to previous official ROM.

Get the European ROM from here

Other HTC DIAMOND users shall get their update from their regional HTC website. Go to Support link to find out if HTC has an update for you.

Note: There is no update for the Indian HTC DIAMOND

Usual warning: This is a generic update, which means that it would wipe-off the data on your device. Make sure to do a proper backup. Please note that the contents of the “intenal storage” would remain intact.

Tip for Barack Obama – Dump that BlackBerry for a NSA-approved Windows Mobile device

Obama currently uses a blackberry for mobile-email. No doubt, it is great for email, but routing his email all through Canada does raises a few security concerns. Instead, he can use an NSA-approved Windows Mobile device, which would give much more security.

According to the General Dynamics site, the Sectéra Edge boasts the following:

  • Secure and non-secure wireless phone, e-mail and web browsing
  • Withstands rigors of both tactical and everyday environments
  • Global roaming over GSM, CDMA or Wi-Fi* wireless networks
  • Software upgradeable to VoIP
  • Exchange secure e-mail with government personnel, including S/MIME BlackBerry® users
  • IPv6 software upgradeable
  • Familiar Microsoft® Windows® Platform
  • Wireless desktop synchronization
  • Separation of Classified and Unclassified applications
  • One-touch switching between classified and unclassified PDA functions
  • Advanced Security Features
  • Secure wireless access to the SIPRNET and NIPRNET
  • DoD PKI enabled Common Access Card (CAC) support
  • Supports DoD 8100.2 requirements
  • Type 1 encrypted storage of classified data
  • Can be used inside closed areas with “SCIF-Friendly” feature

It is also NSA-certified. Oh and I forgot to mention the price of that Windows Mobile device. It is mere $3500 :)

Compulab Exeda runs both Google Android and Windows Mobile

The Exeda from Compulab may not be the prettiest device you would come across, but it is very flexible both in terms of hardware as-well-as software. It has U-boot bootloader, which gives the user the choice to boot between either in Google Android or Windows Mobile. Connectivity-wise, it has 2 USB ports; a Quad-band GSM radio(or CDMA radio), WiFi b/g and BT 2.0. It also has a 3.5-inch VGA display (640 x 480), which would make web-browsing acceptable on a mobile device.

Here are it’s other features:

  • Marvell PXA270 520MHz CPU
  • 128MB RAM
  • 2 banks of internal FLASH, 512MB each
  • 2MP camera with flash
  • GPS with built-in and external antennas
  • MicroSD socket with SDHC support
  • Built-in microphone and speaker + 3.5mm stereo jack
  • High capacity 3000mAh battery

Exeda also supports Windows CE 6 and Angstrom Linux. Although these are not on the board, but it is nice to know that the hardware supports CE 6 and Linux (mobile) variant.

Give your Resco Explorer XBox 360 look [Windows Mobile]

With the release of Resco Explorer v7, the Resco Explorer gained the capability to skin itself. Sadly, no one ever came forward to skin the Resco Explorer. Although, numerous skins were introduced for it’s Today Plugin, but no skin was ever released for the Resco Explorer. Not anymore now.

jmckeejr, a very creative guy has made two skins for the Resco Explorer. Both look alike except for the fact that one uses green color to show the detail and another one uses white color for detail. Here is a quick screenshot of the skin:

How to install the skin:

  • Get the skin from this post
  • Put both of the skn files under program filesresco explorerskins
  • Open Resco Explorer and go to “Menu”>customize>skin(tab)
  • Select the 360 or 360Green
