ASUS Eee PC Is Forbes Asia’s Product of the Year for 2008

ASUS Eee PC™ has been named Forbes Asia’s Product of the Year for 2008, right after being crowned Stuff Magazine’s Gadget of the Year and Computer of the Year. In justifying its selection, Forbes hailed the Eee PC™ for “its innovation and disruption”, and added that the “ultraportable” netbook had “changed the global PC industry”. This new addition to the Eee PC’s™ mantle joins numerous other awards chalked up in the media, design and industry circles over the past year, most notably NBC.com’s Best Travel Gadget and the prestigious G-Mark Award.

Since its official launch in October 2007, the Eee PC™ has garnered numerous international awards from the media, design and industry circles. Apart from receiving the Forbes Asia Product of the Year and Stuff Gadget of the Year/Computer of the Year honors, the Eee PC™ has also been named NBC.com’s Best Travel Gadget, Computer Shopper’s Best Netbook of 2008, PC Pro’s Hardware of the Year, PC World’s Best Netbook, and DIME magazine’s 2008 Trend Award Winner

It is truely another thing that the best selling netbook at the moment is the ACER Aspire One, but credit goes to ASUS for making the netbook concept reach the consumers properly.

No EeePC Logo showed while booting?

So your EEE PC 1000H or 904HA does not show the EEE PC logo while booting. Well, the reason is that the boot booster has been enabled which reduces the boot time. If you want the splash screen saying EEE PC back, here is how to do it.

As-soon-as you start the device, keep pressing F2 until you enter BIOS. Then go into Boot–>Boot Booster [Disable]. That is it.

Keep in mind that it will take a while before you see your operating system booting up. This is because aforementioned steps disable quick+quite boot which makes system check every single component of 1000h.

So we do not recommend to it checked all the time. To enable Boot Booster again, go to BIOS again by pressing F2 key when your computer boots and turn boot booster on.

Windows 7 on EEE 900

The Windows 7 worked fine on the EEE 1000H and EEE 904HA. They both sport Intel Atom 1.6GHz processor which made the Windows 7 as-well-as vista run fine. But, how would it perform on a Intel Celeron 900MHz CPU? People have speculated that Windows 7 will be designed with keeping netbooks in mind. Sadly, that does not look when we look at the Video below, which shows an EEE PC 900 running Windows 7.

It also takes nearly 9GB to install. While this may not be a problem on netbooks with big HDDs, but it is certainly is a big problem on the ones with smaller SSDs

Dell mini 12 now comes with Windows XP and Ubuntu option

Until now we knew that the Dell’s Inspiron Mini 12 came only with Windows Vista Basic. This was not a nice thing to do on Dell’s part as not everyone is a fan of Windows Vista Netbook. Looks like Dell has listen to the people’s wants and has now made available the Mini 12 in both Windows XP and Ubuntu 8.04.1.

As for pricing, the Ubuntu-based model is available at  $499 while the Windows XP is priced at $549.

This is a great news as I’m not myself a big fan of running Vista on such a weak 12″ netbook especially the Vista Basic which does not have the Aero Engine. Windows XP is a great performer on the netbooks. Wise move Dell!

EEEbuntu 8.10 officially launched!

The latest version of highly awaited EEEbuntu has been officially launched. The EEEbuntu is a customized verison of Linux that is specially developed for the EEE PCs. The EEEbuntu is based upon the latest Ubuntu 8.10 (hence the name EEE buntu 8.10) and uses Array as the kernel.

It comes in 3 flavours (yum!)

  • Base: As the name implies, this contains the bare minimum stuff for the system to work. This is recommended for the Linux geeks who prefer to install just what they want. So, this is not for the newbies
  • Standard: This is a full featured flavor which contains everything with full set of office and multimedia applications. It provides full desktop experience to complete the whole package.
  • NBR: Stands for Netbook Remix. This is a version which includes the famous Netbook Remix Launcher over the standard install.

The best part is that everything is already pre-configured. Everything from drivers to even web-browser! Please note that it is meant to be installed on EEE pcs only Continue reading “EEEbuntu 8.10 officially launched!”

Review: EEE PC system shrinker

The EEE PC with SSDs come with not-so-spacious space. The EEE PC 701 comes with just 4GB SSD. Out of this, a lot of storage space is taken by the OS itself. Now, not all of us have the time and courage to nlite the Windows XP OS. Those who have installed full Windows XP on their system have to deal with low-disk space problems.

ASUS understood this and they have come up with EEE PC system shrinker: A utitlity that cleans your system by deleting unnessary files. The system shrinker is a stand alone application and thus can be put anywhere on your system. It is also very small in size (just 272kb).

Holiday Guide – Find out which Netbook, UMPC and Mobile Phone is most bang for a buck this holiday season?

No doubt that we are still bearing the effects of depression right now. We need to make wise choices. We just cannot afford to step into the market and get the latest shiny stuff. I’m not saying that we should get old stuff, but in this article I’m going to enlist the best products at best prices. I’ll also give you the names of the best ones too!

Holiday Guide - Find out which Netbook, UMPC and Mobile Phone is most bang for a buck this holiday season?

Most-bang-for-a-buck UMPC: Fujitsu U810/U1010

Ultra-mobiles are popular for their huge price-tags. Their sales are not counted in millions like iPhone and HTC Diamond. Last year, the Fujitsu U810 (US) and U1010 (Asia) were quite out-of customer’s reach. Both were >$1000 and thus was not very popular among customers. This is not the scene this year. They can now be bought for around $700-800 now making it a very attractive package. For nearly $700, you are getting a UMPC that runs vista fine (you can use XP too), comes with decent HDD, 1 GB RAM, clamshell design and reputed brand name in tablet PCs, Fujitsu. You cannot go wrong with it.

Is the Google Chrome recommended for the netbooks like ASUS EEE 700 series with WVGA resolution?

Google Chrome came out of its beta stage a couple of days ago. It is working great on the notebooks and other latest netbooks with 1024 x 600 resolution. But, how does it work on the UMPCs and netbooks with WVGA (800 x 480) resolution.

Is the Google Chrome recommended for the netbooks like ASUS EEE 700 series with WVGA resolution

Installation

The installation was painless. I just pointed my browser to http://chrome.google.com and it took me to the download page. The installation was done over the air and didn’t involve any user interaction at all, which is a nice thing. However, this means that you cannot install it on the driver of your choice.

Web-Browsing

The EEE 701 and other UMPCs and netbooks that sport a 800 x 480 display often struggle to provide decent web-browsing experience out-of-box. This is mainly due to the fact they come with IE6 or IE7. The linux version of EEE 700 series comes with Firefox 2 and it is not simple to upgrade to the Firefox 3 if you are on Xandros (default OS that comes with the 701 series).

Stories aside, lets me give you some comparison pictures. Pictures say a thousand words by itself. Right? You can click on any screenshot to see the actual resolution screenshot.

Lenovo introduces S10 Special Edition "Gold"

Lenovo has launched Special Edition “Gold” S10 netbook in the Hong Kong. It looks so good. So far, I have no idea that it will be made available in other countries. The Lenovo S10 is a decent netbook with quite nice features. The 6-cell battery is also going to be made available worldwide making this netbook a great deal overall.

The discounts are also available on the S10 models. Sadly, the gold edition is not being entertained by this offer.
