UK Retailer Recalls Webbook – Linux Not Popular, Windows still the Choice

Uh uh. Carphone Warehouse customers aren’t quite happy to use with netbook which runs Linux. The reason is that they not comfortable using the OS. The company saw a vast number of customers returning the netbooks due to the Linux OS. As a result, they are installing Window XP which seems to be more comfortable with customers.

According to me, they should have gone with easier version of Linux like Xandros, which is simply the most user friendly and easiest OS I’ve ever come accross. The 10.2 inch CW was released in July.

Windows 7 on ASUS EEE 1000H – REPORT with Video

Windows 7 on ASUS EEE 1000H - REPORT with VideoI bit the bullet and installed Windows 7 on the ASUS EEE 1000H.

  • The installation is quite similar to the Windows Vista installation.
  • The installation went fine with no hiccups. It took just 20-25 minutes for the complete installation.
  • During the installation, it did get stuck at 0% for quite some time while “expanding files” and scared me a bit, but after 5 minutes, the percentage started increasing.
  • VGA drivers were automatically picked up
  • Aero was working without any problems
  • IE 8 beta is included

Here is the Video of experience of Windows 7 on ASUS EEE 1000H

The vista gave me a modest Vista experience index of 2.0 (click on screenshot to see it’s original size screenshot). Overall, the performance is quite satisfactory. It is not slower than Vista, if not faster.

So, all in all, Windows 7 should work without problems when it is finally released. Is it too early to comment on the perfomance? Yes, it is. But, so far, no problems at all right now.

See this link to make the drivers run properly on Windows 7. That article is about making the Vista run nicely on the 1000H and applies for Windows 7 too.

iKit by iMovio – What is exactly? A netbook or a sibling to the handheld?

According to iKit’s website, it is”Think of the iKIT as a mini laptop without the complexity. It’s built like a laptop with a rugged processor and Linux based operating system, but that’s where the comparison ends.

It’s the ideal chat, email and internet accessory because it contains all the essentials without the size and cost. With several key multimedia features like music and video as well a video camera for VoIP video conferencing and you have the ultimate mobile-communicator.”

This device reminds of the Sony UX50 handheld device, which was released 5 years ago. Specifications are also quite same. The only two difference I see is the use of Linux OS and cheaper price. UX50 retailed at around $650 at that time. Sure, this won’t cost that much as time and technology has changed a lot. It is planned to be launched at Q3 of 2009. I would love to get my hands on one of these though to see how well the linux runs on it

How does Visual Studio.net (VS.net) works on ASUS EEE 1000H – Programmer’s view

I’ve been received atleast a couple of emails from the programmers to tell them how the Visual Studio performs on the ASUS 1000H. I’ve pointed this already in the full review of the ASUS 1000H that it is perfect for the programmers due to these reasons:

HOW TO: upgrade RAM or Hard Disk in ASUS EEE 1000H

When it comes to upgrading RAM in the ASUS EEE PCs, it is no hidden truth that it is a very easy job. Even though 1GB RAM in the ASUS EEE 1000H seems to be very sufficient, but there are some power users which would like to more RAM if:

  • they wish to run Vista, which always like more RAM
  • if they want to use RAMdisk (see this article to implement RAMdisk)
  • just for fun!

I was getting many requests by the users to write a simple guide to upgrade RAM on the EEE 1000H, which I reviewed just a couple of days ago.

Use a Phillips “crosshead” screwdriver to open the RAM and hard disk access door

upgrade RAM or Hard Disk in ASUS EEE 1000H

EEE 1000H makes swapping the HDD so easily. Below the HDD, is the RAM chip.

Gently, take the RAM chip out by moving both of the holders outside. The chip will come out.

Take it out and slide in the new RAM. Take extra care of the holders. This is the RAM which comes with the ASUS 1000H. It is A-Data branded DDR2 RAM with 400MHz bus speed.
