MSI X-Slim 320 – MSI’s answer to Apple Macbook Air

MSI is all set to introduce a 13.4-inch notebook, which runs Intel Atom processor. The display has an aspect ratio of 16:9 and weighs a modest 1.3kg. It is incredibly thin too having a depth of just 1.98cm. X-Slim 320 originally comes with a 4-cell battery inside it’s box, but there is also a 8-cell battery which can give you nearly 10 hours of battery life.

It also comes with 3 USB ports,  RJ-45 port and card reader. With the rumored price of around $999, this clearly makes it more “bang for a buck” than the Apple’s Macbook Air, which also looks very similar to X-Slim 320 by MSI.

Coming back to the use of Intel Atom processor in MSI X-Slim 320, does this make it a netbook? I guess we will soon have to change the main definition of netbook to one of the following soon:

Any device bigger than 7″ that runs a full Desktop OS and is capable of accessing the Internet

or

Any device that runs Intel Atom processor

I admit the last definition is pretty vague considering the fact that the HP also has plans to use Atom processor in one of their upcoming Notebooks. Netbooks were origianally meant to act like those cheap mini-laptops that offered full desktop OS and could quickly connect us to the Internet. But now, as the Atom is now being used in bigger devices, should them also be considered as netbook?

What are you thoughts?

Pink Eee PC S101 – Perfect shades of Pink [EEE PC]

The first question that comes to girl’s mind when we see a gadget is, “Will it come in pink? ” The answer is, “Yes, the S101 is actually now available in pink”. It seems to be making great impressions with another pink-lover. According to pixiestash, the unit oozes high quality and it makes the EEE 701 look like a mere toy. They further extend the comparison by saying that:

The metal parts are not chrome but understated gunmetal, and the crystals embedded in either end of the hinge are subtly sparkly. The keyboard is unfortunately not pink, but the palm rest and multitouch trackpad are brushed metal and color-matched to the pink cover. Even the case is classier than the 701’s, in brown, padded ultrasuede with matching drawstring bag for the cable and power brick.

Japan already got the hot pink version of S101in December 2008.

Remap the Panel button of Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 [Windows Mobile]

Do you want to use the Panel button of the Xperia X1 for something other than launching the panel interface? There is a way to do it, but certainly not the most user-friendly way. It involves registry editing and messing up the registry can have undesirable effects, which may involve committing hard-reset.

Here are the steps to do it:

  1. Get a registry editor for windows mobile. If you use Resco Explorer, you can use the free registry editor that comes with it. PHM Registry Editor works fine too
  2. Go to HKLMSoftwareSonyEricssonPanelManagerApplicationName. Here application name is the name of the application
  3. Make sure you point directly to the actual EXE and not the shortcut file (lnk)
  4. Make sure the path is in the following format. “..” should be there as prefix in every case.

“..Windowspword.exe”

BenQ Joybook Lite U101 reviewed

Folks at laptopmag have recently reviewed the highly anticipated netbook by BenQ, the Joybook Lite U101. While they were quite impressed with the bright display and artistic lid of this netbook, they were not so happy with the cramped keyboard and sub-par battery life. Laptopmag says,

BenQ valiantly tries to make a splash in the netbook space. The Joybook Lite U101 sports a fun design and offers solid performance, but it’s outshined by other 10-inch netbooks when it comes to endurance and ergonomics. For example, the $499 Samsung NC10 comes standard with a longer lasting six-cell battery and has a better keyboard. This netbook has style, but we wish it had more substance.

Here are the quick specifications of this netbook:

  • CPU: 1.6-GHz Intel Atom N270
  • OS: Windows XP Home
  • RAM/Expandable: 1.5/2GB
  • Hard Drive Size/Speed: 160GB/5,400 rpm
  • Display/Resolution: 10.1 inches/1024 x 576

BenQ tried to make this netbook to look a little different from the rest of the netbooks, but they should have integrated a quality 90%+ laptop size keyboard to make the whole typing experience better for the people. Keyboard is now becoming the most important feature for the people who want to buy a netbook for themselves. May be in the next Joybook, they will come up with a better keyboard.
