Samsung's Android phone coming!

Not now, but by second quarter of next year(2009). Samsung will be introducing an Android phone in the US market. Last year was the year for iPhone. Now, it looks like the coming year 2009 will be an Android year. Samsung seems to be very serious with this as it has employed nearly 80 developers to work upon their Android phone, which includes many Java and Linux developers.

Internet Mobile 6 now available for the HTC TOUCH HD

Paul at Modaco has made a custom ROM in which he has integrated IE mobile 6. Though Microsoft said that the IE mobile 6 won’t be available as separate download for the current devices, ROM cookers have found ways of streamlining it inside the ROM itself.

Quick Look: Introducing the Palm Store – do not get too excited

Well, we definitely wanted it to be one to rival the Apple’s App Store. Sadly, this is not the case here. When I heard the “Palm Store” word a couple of days ago, I thought finally in Windows Mobile world, somebody has done something which should have been done a long time back.

Installation

It certainly rose my hopes a lot when I downloaded the 1.1MB exe from Palm’s website. I executed it on my PC and it installed a TINY 28KB application on my HTC Diamond. It obviously made me wondered how could Palm integrate the whole application in a tiny 28KB CAB file!

Alright, it installed it on my device and it looked very promising especially with that cart icon. I still had a lot of hopes with the 28KB application :)

Toshiba introduces 512GB SSD

Toshiba becomes the first country to introduce the first Industry’s 512GB solid state drive. This NAND based flash storage is a standard 2.5″ drive based on 43nm MLC. It supports excellent read speeds of 240MBps and write speeds of 200MBps! The drives comes with AES encryption, which improves data protection. Toshiba also plans to introduce 64GB, 128GB and 256GB SSD versions.

Wow! Time is changing at a speedy rate. Who knew that we would see the news of 512GB SSD so soon considering the fact I’m still running 4GB SSD in my 8month old EEE 701.

Dell mini 12 now comes with Windows XP and Ubuntu option

Until now we knew that the Dell’s Inspiron Mini 12 came only with Windows Vista Basic. This was not a nice thing to do on Dell’s part as not everyone is a fan of Windows Vista Netbook. Looks like Dell has listen to the people’s wants and has now made available the Mini 12 in both Windows XP and Ubuntu 8.04.1.

As for pricing, the Ubuntu-based model is available at  $499 while the Windows XP is priced at $549.

This is a great news as I’m not myself a big fan of running Vista on such a weak 12″ netbook especially the Vista Basic which does not have the Aero Engine. Windows XP is a great performer on the netbooks. Wise move Dell!

EEEbuntu 8.10 officially launched!

The latest version of highly awaited EEEbuntu has been officially launched. The EEEbuntu is a customized verison of Linux that is specially developed for the EEE PCs. The EEEbuntu is based upon the latest Ubuntu 8.10 (hence the name EEE buntu 8.10) and uses Array as the kernel.

It comes in 3 flavours (yum!)

  • Base: As the name implies, this contains the bare minimum stuff for the system to work. This is recommended for the Linux geeks who prefer to install just what they want. So, this is not for the newbies
  • Standard: This is a full featured flavor which contains everything with full set of office and multimedia applications. It provides full desktop experience to complete the whole package.
  • NBR: Stands for Netbook Remix. This is a version which includes the famous Netbook Remix Launcher over the standard install.

The best part is that everything is already pre-configured. Everything from drivers to even web-browser! Please note that it is meant to be installed on EEE pcs only Continue reading “EEEbuntu 8.10 officially launched!”

Review: EEE PC system shrinker

The EEE PC with SSDs come with not-so-spacious space. The EEE PC 701 comes with just 4GB SSD. Out of this, a lot of storage space is taken by the OS itself. Now, not all of us have the time and courage to nlite the Windows XP OS. Those who have installed full Windows XP on their system have to deal with low-disk space problems.

ASUS understood this and they have come up with EEE PC system shrinker: A utitlity that cleans your system by deleting unnessary files. The system shrinker is a stand alone application and thus can be put anywhere on your system. It is also very small in size (just 272kb).

Holiday Guide – Find out which Netbook, UMPC and Mobile Phone is most bang for a buck this holiday season?

No doubt that we are still bearing the effects of depression right now. We need to make wise choices. We just cannot afford to step into the market and get the latest shiny stuff. I’m not saying that we should get old stuff, but in this article I’m going to enlist the best products at best prices. I’ll also give you the names of the best ones too!

Holiday Guide - Find out which Netbook, UMPC and Mobile Phone is most bang for a buck this holiday season?

Most-bang-for-a-buck UMPC: Fujitsu U810/U1010

Ultra-mobiles are popular for their huge price-tags. Their sales are not counted in millions like iPhone and HTC Diamond. Last year, the Fujitsu U810 (US) and U1010 (Asia) were quite out-of customer’s reach. Both were >$1000 and thus was not very popular among customers. This is not the scene this year. They can now be bought for around $700-800 now making it a very attractive package. For nearly $700, you are getting a UMPC that runs vista fine (you can use XP too), comes with decent HDD, 1 GB RAM, clamshell design and reputed brand name in tablet PCs, Fujitsu. You cannot go wrong with it.
