Too Many resolutions = Nightmare for Windows Mobile developers

The year 2008 has been the best year for the Windows Mobile platform. In this year, we saw new handsets, better and innovative designs. We also saw Sony Ericsson finally getting into the Windows Mobile world. We saw Windows Mobile 6.1 too. With every version of Windows Mobile, plethora of new features are added. But, have we ever thought this from a developer perspective. Today, I received a long email from a Windows Mobile developer. I would like to keep his name anonymous to prevent him from getting into any kind of trouble.

The Apple iPhone as-well-as iPod Touch have fixed resolution of 480 x 320. This makes the life easier for the developers as all they need to do is to support two resolutions: 480 x 320 and 320 x 480.

Just look at the number of resolutions supported by the Windows Mobile!

  • 320 x 240
  • 240 x 320
  • 400 x 240
  • 240 x 400
  • 240 x 240
  • 320 x 320
  • 640 x 480
  • 480 x 640
  • 800 x 480
  • 480 x 800

Shocked? Well, the sad story does not ends there. Even making a free application for Windows Mobile can cost you a lot of money. On the other side of the coin, the development kit from Apple is free.

CHAPURA introduces Keytasks software for iPhone and iPod Touch

Chapura is offering owners of iPhone and iPod touch devices an easy-to-use and reliable way to carry Microsoft Outlook Tasks.  Similar to MobileMe and Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, KeyTasks allows users to wirelessly synchronize and manage Outlook Tasks from anywhere.

KeyTasks provides the perfect blend of the iPhone experience with Outlook productivity.   KeyTasks is installed on the device, not run from the Web, allowing task management even when a data connection is not available.  When a data connection is available KeyTasks can wirelessly synchronize with Chapura’s Web servers. This is commonly referred to as the “cloud.” When a change is made in Outlook or on the device and synchronized, that change is sent up to the cloud. The iPhone, iPod touch or Outlook Tasks will receive this change when synchronized; keeping information current in multiple places from anywhere.

Price: KeyTasks is a subscription-based product available for a special introductory offer of $9.95 per year in the iPhone App Store.

iPhone 3G unlocked-They did it again!

A Brazlian company is claiming to be the first one to unlock an iPhone 3G. It has been done by using a SIM card adapter. The trick they have used has been used many times to make the phone think that it is on the approved network but actually it is not.

Here is the video related to it:

Apple says "copy paste functions are of low priority"

Apple says that the copy and paste functions were omitted from the iPhone 3G just because they are of low priority. These functions were put at the end of the ‘Apple’s wishlist‘.

..and then they say, we won’t offer any support to the jailbroken iPhones and iPod Touches :!:

1,000,000 iPhones sold in first weekend!

Mr. Jobs must on cloud 9 at the moment. The apple has sold over a million phones in it’s first weekend. This has been a stunning weekend for the Apple.

“iPhone 3G had a stunning opening weekend,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s
CEO. “It took 74 days to sell the first one million original iPhones, so
the new iPhone 3G is clearly off to a great start around the world.”

iPhone Activation Servers Fail: new users angry

Due to the overwhelming demand of the new iPhone 3G, the servers were brought to their toes when thousands (millions?) of new iPhone owners tried to activate their iPhone 3Gs. AT&T is actually sending customers home with their new iPhones and telling them to activate via iTunes.

So, you are left with a shiny new device with the emergency mode. Cool!
